Hyperkalemia is an electrolyte abnormality with potentially life-threatening consequences. Based on currently available evidence, there is a need to improve effective management of hyperkalemia. Recent clinical studies suggest that the novel oral K+ binders (patiromer and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate) may have important roles in handling this problem. Enhancing the knowledge of physicians and providers with respect to the safety profiles of these newer K binders may increase confidence in managing patients with hyperkalemia.
